Historical Findings: March 2018

The late 1800's was a boom time for genealogy. The elders in many families had been born in the 1820's through 1840's and they still remembered grandparents who were born before the turn of the 19th century. There was a huge interest in recording the history of the country and many wanted to make a family connection to that history.

This post consists of the digital copy of a Birchard family notebook created in the late 1800's.

I believe it was compiled by Dwight Darius Birchard, of Cambridge Springs, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Some of the materials appear to have been provided by his cousins Nathan Birchard and H. C. Birchard. The first section is a copy of a letter from Nathan Birchard.

There are several letters and handwritten genealogies stuck in the booklet or copied into the book. That suggests that the extended family in western Pennsylvania sent him information about their children and grandchildren.
